The basics

What are uterine fibroids?

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths of muscle that develop in or on the wall of the uterus. They’re extremely common — many women have them at some point — and they range from tiny to large. In Hindi they’re widely known as "bacchedani mein gaanth". Having fibroids does not mean cancer, and many cause no trouble at all and simply need watching.

When fibroids do cause symptoms, it’s usually heavy or prolonged periods, a feeling of pressure or bloating in the lower tummy, needing to pass urine often, or discomfort — and, in some cases, difficulty conceiving. The good news is that treatment today is very effective, and often keyhole, so you don’t have to just live with the symptoms.

Do all fibroids need treatment?

No. Many fibroids are small, symptom-free, and simply watched. Treatment is guided by your symptoms and plans — whether periods are heavy, whether there’s pressure, and whether you’re hoping to conceive — not just by the presence of a fibroid on a scan.

Why it happens

Why fibroids grow

Common, hormone-sensitive, and not caused by anything you did.

Hormone-sensitive

Fibroids grow under the influence of oestrogen, which is why they often shrink after menopause and can change through life.

Family tendency

They tend to run in families and are very common overall — having them is not a sign anything has gone wrong.

Where they sit matters

A fibroid’s size and position — inside the cavity, in the wall, or on the surface — decides whether it causes heavy bleeding, pressure, or nothing at all.

At the clinic

How fibroids are assessed

Quick, clear and matched to what you want to do next.

Fibroids are straightforward to assess, and the plan depends entirely on your symptoms and goals. Dr. Agarwal explains it all in plain words.

Your symptoms

How your periods are, any pressure or urinary changes, and whether you’re planning a pregnancy.

Ultrasound scan

A painless scan maps the number, size and position of fibroids — which guides everything that follows.

Check your iron

If periods are heavy, a simple blood test catches anaemia so it can be corrected alongside treatment.

Your options, explained

From watching, to medicine, to keyhole removal — matched to your symptoms and your fertility plans.

Your care

Treatment, including keyhole removal

The least intervention that solves your symptoms — and protects your uterus when you want a baby.

Medicine & monitoring

For many women, medicine to control heavy bleeding plus a watchful eye is enough — especially for smaller fibroids or those near menopause.

Laparoscopic myomectomy

Keyhole removal of fibroids that keeps your uterus — ideal if you hope to conceive. Small cuts, less pain, faster recovery.

Definitive options

When a family is complete and symptoms are severe, options like NDVH (scarless vaginal hysterectomy) can give a lasting solution — discussed only if right for you.

You have real choices here. Fibroids rarely need drastic action. Whether you want to keep your uterus for a future pregnancy or simply end heavy periods for good, there’s a route that fits — usually keyhole.

Questions women ask

Uterine fibroids — your questions

Are fibroids cancer?

No. Fibroids are non-cancerous (benign) growths of muscle in the uterus. They’re very common, and having them does not mean cancer. Cancerous change is extremely rare.

Do fibroids always need surgery?

No. Many are small and symptom-free and simply watched. Treatment depends on your symptoms and plans — heavy periods, pressure, or hoping to conceive — not just the presence of a fibroid.

Can I still have a baby if I have fibroids?

Usually yes. Many women with fibroids conceive without difficulty. If a fibroid is affecting fertility, a keyhole myomectomy that keeps your uterus can help. Dr. Agarwal has supported 300+ pregnancies without IVF.

What is laparoscopic myomectomy?

It’s keyhole removal of fibroids that preserves your uterus — done through a few small cuts, with less pain and a quicker recovery than open surgery. It’s often the preferred choice for women who want to conceive.

Will fibroids go away on their own?

They often shrink after menopause as oestrogen falls. Before that, they don’t usually disappear, but many stay small and cause no problems, so simply monitoring them is a valid choice.

Is the consultation private?

Completely. Booking over WhatsApp is discreet, there are no public forms, and Dr. Agarwal explains your scan and options clearly and without pressure at Medifirst Hospital, Bariatu.
