The basics

What counts as heavy or irregular?

Periods are different for everyone, so it helps to know what’s worth checking. A period is usually called heavy if you’re changing a pad or tampon every hour or two, passing large clots, bleeding for more than seven days, or feeling tired and breathless from the blood loss. It’s called irregular when the gap between periods keeps changing, when you skip months, or when bleeding comes between periods. In Hindi many women describe it simply as "mahwari zyada aana" or "period time pe nahi aana".

These are among the most common reasons women come to Dr. Agarwal — and rarely a sign of anything dangerous. But heavy bleeding can quietly pull down your iron and leave you exhausted, and a changing cycle can be your body’s way of flagging something worth understanding. Either way, you don’t have to just put up with it.

How much bleeding is “too much”?

A useful test: if your period is interrupting your work, sleep, studies or daily life — flooding, leaking, or keeping you home — that’s reason enough to get it checked, whatever the numbers say. You know your own normal, and a change from it is what matters.

Why it happens

What causes heavy or irregular periods?

It’s rarely a mystery once it’s looked into — and almost never your fault.

Hormone shifts

PCOS, thyroid changes, or the natural swings of adolescence and perimenopause can all upset the timing and amount of your bleeding.

Fibroids & polyps

Harmless growths in or on the uterus (fibroids, polyps) are a very common cause of heavy periods — and there are good, keyhole ways to treat them.

Other findable causes

Thyroid problems, low iron, certain medicines, an IUD, or occasionally the uterine lining itself — each has its own simple treatment once identified.

At the clinic

How the cause is found

Quick, comfortable and explained in plain words — so you leave knowing why.

Finding the reason is the whole game — treatment is straightforward once the cause is clear. Dr. Agarwal works through a short, unhurried set of steps and shows you what she sees.

Your story

When periods changed, how heavy, how often, and how it’s affecting your energy and daily life.

Ultrasound scan

A painless scan checks the uterus and ovaries for fibroids, polyps or cysts — done right in the clinic.

A few blood tests

Haemoglobin (for iron), thyroid and hormones where needed — to catch anaemia and hormone causes.

Your plan, explained

Everything put together into one clear plan, matched to whether you want relief, fertility, or both.

Your care

Treatment that matches your life

From simple medicine to keyhole surgery — always the least you need, never more.

Medicine first

Often the cycle can be settled and heavy bleeding reduced with tablets or hormone support — no surgery, and reversible if you’re planning a baby.

Treat the cause

If a fibroid, polyp or thyroid problem is behind it, treating that directly fixes the bleeding — including correcting low iron so you feel yourself again.

Keyhole options

When a procedure helps, Dr. Agarwal is trained in hysteroscopy and laparoscopy — keyhole techniques with small cuts and a quick recovery.

Relief, not just reassurance. The goal is simple: periods you don’t have to plan your life around, and your energy back. Most women start feeling the difference within a cycle or two.

Questions women ask

Heavy & irregular periods — your questions

When should I actually see a doctor about my periods?

If your period is soaking a pad every hour or two, lasting more than seven days, coming with large clots, leaving you tired or breathless, or if your cycle has clearly changed from your normal — it’s worth a check. Bleeding between periods or after intercourse should always be checked.

Does heavy bleeding always mean something serious?

No — most causes are common and very treatable, like hormone shifts, fibroids or thyroid changes. The main risk of ignoring it is quietly becoming anaemic (low iron), which is easily corrected once found.

Will I need surgery?

Usually not. Many women settle completely with medicine or by treating a simple cause. Keyhole procedures are available when they genuinely help, but they’re never the automatic first step.

Can irregular periods affect my chances of getting pregnant?

They can, because they can make ovulation harder to predict — but this is often very treatable. Once the cause is understood, many women conceive naturally or with simple help. Dr. Agarwal has helped 300+ women achieve pregnancy without IVF.

My periods stopped for a few months — should I worry?

Missed periods have many causes, from stress and weight change to PCOS, thyroid or (of course) pregnancy. It’s worth checking rather than guessing — a quick visit usually gives a clear answer.

Is the visit private? I feel awkward discussing this.

Completely private and judgment-free. Booking over WhatsApp is discreet, there are no public forms, and whatever you share stays between you and your doctor. These are among the most common concerns women bring.
